Legitimate automated mail-server traffic

EDVRFY verifies email addresses so senders reach real inboxes.

If you found this page from a reverse-DNS lookup, a connection log, or an HELO/PTR record, you're in the right place. The IP addresses associated with edvrfy.com run our automated email-verification service. This page explains exactly what those servers do, how they behave, and how to reach our operations team.

What EDVRFY does

EDVRFY is an email address verification service. Our customers use it to confirm, before they send, whether an email address is valid and able to receive mail. This reduces bounces, protects sender reputation, and keeps mailing lists clean. We do not send marketing or bulk email of any kind.

Validate deliverability

We check whether an address exists and can accept mail — without ever delivering a message to the recipient.

Protect sender reputation

By removing invalid, malformed, and non-existent addresses, we help legitimate senders avoid bounces and spam traps.

Respect your mail server

Our probes are lightweight, rate-limited, and stop early. We never brute-force addresses or harvest data.

How it operates

A verification check is a short, standards-compliant SMTP conversation. Our servers behave like any well-configured mail transfer agent and disconnect as soon as they have an answer.

1

Syntax & domain checks

We first validate the address format and confirm the domain has valid MX records — most invalid addresses are caught here, with no connection to your server at all.

2

SMTP handshake

For remaining addresses, we open a standard SMTP connection, present a valid HELO/EHLO identity and MAIL FROM, and issue a single RCPT TO to ask whether the mailbox is accepted.

3

Read the response — then stop

We record the server's acceptance or rejection code and immediately issue QUIT. No DATA command is ever sent and no message is delivered.

4

Rate-limit & back off

Connections are throttled per destination, honor greylisting and temporary failures, and back off automatically. We respect deny signals and do not retry aggressively.
